Hyatt Legal Plans Most Utilized Services of 2017

CLEVELAND, March 27, 2018 – Powers of attorneys and wills and codicils topped the list of most utilized services for Hyatt Legal Plans members in 2017. Other estate planning issues such as preparing living wills and trusts, and one real estate issue, preparing deeds, rounded out the list of the top 5 most utilized services.

  1. Powers of Attorney (21%) – Members have access to Network Attorneys to draft financial or healthcare power of attorney documents.
  2. Will and Codicils (14%) – Network Attorneys can review or draft wills for members. Coverage also includes codicils, which are amendments to a will that can replace or alter it.
  3. Living Wills (12%) – Members can contact a Network Attorney to draft a living will to inform health care providers about their preferred medical treatment.
  4. Trusts (7%) – Network Attorneys can prepare revocable or irrevocable living trusts for members.
  5. Deeds (6%) – Members can see an attorney for help in drafting deeds involved in the real estate process.

These matters are fully covered in our model group legal plan, MetLaw, for members that use one of our Network Attorneys. Without access to attorneys through a legal plan, employees could pay an hourly rate of $3381 or more to see an attorney to get help with these issues. Because of the high cost of legal services, many employees delay dealing with legal issues like estate planning or spend time trying to handle issues on their own. As one member told us:

“The Hyatt legal plan allowed my husband and I to establish a will (after procrastinating four years). We now have more comfort knowing that our four-year-old will be taken care of if something were to happen to us.” – Plan member in Massachusetts

Having access to attorneys through a group legal plan allows employees to see attorneys for the many issues they face throughout life such as when they are having children and need to update or draft estate planning documents, or when they are dealing with identity theft issues and need to contact an attorney for help. A recent survey conducted by MetLife found that 60% of employees enrolled in a legal plan said that they feel prepared to handle unforeseen legal events, significantly more than the 39% of employees without a legal plan who said they feel prepared to handle legal issues.2

New Features Added in 2017

Last year, we added two new services to make it easier for members to get help with their legal issues. We enhanced our self-help document library, adding significantly more documents to allow members to handle simple legal issues on their own. Our self-help library has many of the most commonly used legal documents, including living wills, powers of attorney, deeds, promissory notes, premarital agreements and more. After completing the forms, members can contact a Network Attorney to review to ensure documents are filled out correctly.

We also partnered with a translation service, TransPerfect Connect, to offer members the ability to speak with a representative in the language of their choice. Our partnership now allows us to provide translation services in over 100 languages. Members can also work with our Network Attorneys to hire a translator for their meeting and have the cost of the translation services covered through their legal plan.
